Open almost any active Solana wallet and you will find them: tokens you never bought, with names like "Claim 500 SOL" or a lookalike of a real project, worth nothing, and impossible to sell because there is no market for them. They are annoying, they clutter your wallet, and each one is quietly holding about 0.002 SOL of your money hostage.
This guide explains why they are there, what they can and cannot do to you, and the safe way to get rid of them and get the SOL back.
Why you have them
On Solana, anyone can send a token to any address. The sender pays to create the token account in your wallet, so it costs them a fraction of a cent to put something in front of thousands of people. Most spam tokens exist for one reason: the name or the metadata contains a link, and the people who click it get phished.
The token itself is not dangerous. Holding it does nothing. The danger is entirely in the link.
Why you can't just close the account
Every token in your wallet lives in its own token account, and that account holds a rent deposit. Wick Sweep and tools like it recover that deposit by closing the account. But the Solana token program will only close an account whose balance is zero. An account that still holds 1,000,000 units of SCAMCOIN is not empty, so it cannot be closed, so the rent stays locked.
That is why Wick Sweep skips these accounts entirely. We never move tokens, and we cannot close an account that has tokens in it. The token has to go first.
Your three options
1. Hide it. Phantom, Solflare, and Backpack all let you hide a token from your main view, and Phantom automatically hides most known spam. This fixes the clutter and costs nothing, but the account and its locked SOL stay exactly where they are.
2. Burn it. Burning permanently destroys the tokens, which brings the balance to zero. Once the balance is zero the account can be closed and the rent recovered. Tools built for this include Sol Incinerator in Pro Mode and StakePoint's wallet cleanup. Both are non-custodial and both show you what you are about to burn before you sign.
3. Ignore it. Honestly fine for a handful of tokens. At roughly 0.002 SOL each, ten spam tokens are about 0.02 SOL. It only becomes worth your time when the count gets into the dozens.
How to burn safely
- Hide or move anything valuable first. If a wallet holds NFTs or tokens you care about, consider moving them to another wallet before you start burning. A burn is irreversible.
- Open a burn tool and connect your wallet. Sol Incinerator will ask you to switch to Pro Mode; that is expected.
- Select only tokens you recognise as junk. If a token shows a real USD value, stop and check it. Legitimate airdrops sometimes look like spam.
- Read the wallet preview. It should show tokens leaving and a small amount of SOL arriving. If it shows SOL leaving beyond the network fee, reject it.
- Sign, wait for confirmation, and repeat for any remaining batches.
Then reclaim the rent
Burning empties the accounts. Some burn tools close them in the same transaction; others leave them open. Either way, once the balances are zero, a scan with Wick Sweep will find every empty account and close it in batches of up to 25, returning the deposits to your wallet. The scan is free, so it costs nothing to check.
Token-2022 accounts with withheld fees
One corner case. Some newer tokens use the Token-2022 standard with a transfer fee, and an account can hold "withheld" fees even after its visible balance is zero. The token program refuses to close those until the fees are harvested to the mint. Wick Sweep detects this and leaves those accounts out of your batch rather than letting one of them fail the whole transaction. They will show up again once the fees have been harvested.
What not to do
- Do not visit the link in a spam token's name or description. Ever.
- Do not try to "sell" it on a DEX. There is no pool, and some are built so that the swap fails in a way that costs you fees.
- Do not paste your seed phrase into any site that promises to clean your wallet. No legitimate tool needs it.
