Clean Your Backpack Wallet: Close Empty Token Accounts and Reclaim SOL

Clean Your Backpack Wallet: Close Empty Token Accounts and Reclaim SOL

Backpack is popular with people who trade a lot, and trading is the fastest way to fill a wallet with empty token accounts. Every swap that routes through an intermediate token can leave an account behind, and memecoin season leaves dozens. Each one holds roughly 0.002 SOL that is yours but locked.

Here is how to get it back with Wick Sweep, and what to expect from Backpack along the way.

Before you start

  • Keep a small SOL balance for network fees.
  • Only accounts with a zero balance are touched. Anything you still hold is ignored.
  • Type wicksweep.io yourself rather than following a link from a DM or a reply.

Step by step

  1. Open wicksweep.io and click Connect Wallet. Pick Backpack.
  2. Backpack opens an approval popup for the connection. Approve it. Connecting lets the site see your address and request signatures; it does not grant any spending permission.
  3. Click Scan. Wick Sweep lists every empty token account in the connected wallet with the SOL locked in each.
  4. Click Clean. For more than 25 accounts you will sign one transaction per batch.
  5. Read Backpack's signing screen. It shows the simulated balance change. SOL should be coming in. The only outgoing items are the service fee and the network fee.
  6. Approve each batch. Wick Sweep confirms them and rescans so you can see the wallet is clean.

If you have multiple accounts in Backpack

Backpack makes it easy to keep several accounts in one wallet, and this is the most common source of confusion. Wick Sweep scans and cleans the account that is currently selected in Backpack. If you switch accounts after scanning, the page will notice and rescan rather than try to close the wrong account's token accounts. To clean several accounts, do them one at a time: select, scan, clean, switch, repeat.

How much comes back

Older accounts hold about 0.00204 SOL. Accounts opened after Solana's September 2026 rent reduction hold about 0.00149 SOL, with further reductions scheduled. Wick Sweep shows the real deposit per account before you clean, and the fee is a percentage of that figure: 4% free, 2% on Plus, 0% on Pro.

Common issues

Backpack warns the transaction might fail. One account in the batch probably cannot be closed, often a Token-2022 account with withheld transfer fees. Rescan; Wick Sweep excludes those.

"Owner does not match" after signing. The selected account changed between scan and clean. Rescan.

Hardware wallet attached. Backpack with a Ledger works, but each batch needs a confirmation on the device, so large cleanups take a few minutes.
